While he opted for the studio, thumping into cast people past and provide, i had been reminded of why we love to Jimmy to start with ... and why it absolutely was this kind of pleasure to own him back on SNL. The Two carried out Bahh-stin-dwelling secondary school sweethearts by getting a desire for open-mouth kissing as well as the Red-colored-colored Sawx. Shailene Woodley, 'Descendants' Star, Doesn't Wish to discover Oscar Buzz, George Clooney's Fart Machine

Shailene Woodley likes to say "fuck." Sadly, since the star in the ABC Family series 'The Secret Existence in the American Teen,' she's not frequently because of the chance to do this. That changed through the filming of Alexander Payne's 'The Descendants,' an R-rated George Clooney vehicle that has thrust Woodley to the Oscar discussion. Just don't request her in regards to the Oscar discussion. In 'The Descendants,' Woodley plays Alexandra King -- the frequently surly teenage daughter of Matt King (Clooney) -- who should not only cope with the fact her mother is at a coma carrying out a boating accident, but that her mother happen to be cheating on her behalf account father. Moviefone spoke to Woodley about her much "buzzed-about" performance (an expression she hates), her somewhat mixed feelings in regards to the couple of years she's left on her behalf account television contract, and why her late adolescence cost her the role of Kaitlin Cooper (employment she already had) on 'The O.C.' (It had been among Woodley's last interviews throughout your day. As this interview starts, i had been joking about the amount of occasions they must answer the identical questions.) "You're in the movie. What's they enjoy? In . "The facts prefer to utilize George Clooney?" The amount of occasions are you currently presently asked for that? Many. [Laughs] Many, many, many, many. Which I do not mind reacting to because he's worth keeping to go over. Right. It is not like asking exactly what it was like coping with Gaddafi. It might be weirder, yeah. I appear like lots of people within your position, while using tv series that you're on, get cast in teen comedy movies or perhaps the shitty horror movie, however, you have George Clooney's potential Oscar movie. Personally it definitely is been about truth, too for sitting on a show as extended as I've been inside it -- and in a contract for the next couple of years -- I've many userful stuff here about producing obligations and very needing to pay target the fabric that you just concentrate on. And i'm so grateful for your show, oh my gosh gosh, it's been this kind of fun ride ... But if you stated in a contract for the next couple of years, you have made a distressed face. What did meaning? Can you not might like to do the show for the next couple of years? No, no, no. I must have it accomplished for one more couple of years. I developed a commitment for the next couple of years. But ... it certainly ... I'm speaking about, In my opinion doing anything around you learn things. As well as the finest learning lesson that really was needing to pay concentrate on everything you do. Because if you do sign a contract, you must do sign -- I'd rather not say a portion from the existence -- however, you produce a commitment. And you also stick with that commitment. But using this movie, or possibly in each and every movie -- I've been acting since i have have was five -- it definitely is been really fun and never something which I desired to complete or are actually pressed to accomplish. It's something I've loved doing, if Someone said a script which is cheesy -- I'm speaking about, everyone signifies cheesy in different ways -- however when I don't feel anything inside me, i quickly am clearly not meant to accomplish this movie. Then when Someone said this script, I obtained the finest guttural feeling of immense passion. That was the signal that If only to utilize this. And, being fair, if you signed that contract, you had been not in 'The Descendants' yet. Yeah, but that's the whole strategy part of acting which i will not ever participate because because In my opinion it's all regulated controlled Baloney. Is it possible to screw yourself up by doing that? Not necessarily. I realize lots of people who've attempted it and they're extremely effective from it. But, personally, acting isn't my only passion around, therefore i refuse take a lot more than. And many types of it's is fun. And i'm passionate about this which i've fun carrying it out. So when I have to plan the way in which i actually do that to have the ability to do that, it's boring! Which is demanding plus it makes me anxious which is tough whatsoever also it'll make me desire to quit. So, I refuse to learn the politics. I did so the show because I believed it may be fun, not because I believed it could take me anywhere. Once I reserved the film, everyone was, "Oh, you reserved the film because you did this show -- this is why you've this movie." And Alexander [Payne] described, initially initially when i first reserved it, "If perhaps you'd dirty the show because I desired somebody who hadn't done anything." You're angry a good deal in this movie. I realize, it's acting, however it must result from somewhere. Yeah, you understand, it absolutely was fun. It absolutely was really fun to argue and spar with George. Because, to start with, he is not George Clooney, quote, famous guy, finish quote, in my opinion any more. He's George Clooney, guy from Kentucky. Merely a good guy. To be capable of spar with him and argue -- and be in the movie where you stand allowed to convey words like "fuck" as well as the "t-word" -- I don't know essentially should say it at this time around... It's the Internet. All test is allowed. It's fun! In lots of movies they're like, "Oh, no, no. We would like it PG-13 We're not able to condition that.Inch Also to be capable of say those to an actress like George Clooney, who is able to spit back -- it absolutely was fun. I like fighting. It's my job to condition that I'll never win a real fight, however can almost always win a mental fight. I'm speaking about, not always, because I never really argue with anybody. Is he still a prankster? That's always the story, "George Clooney can be a prankster!" We was without any infamous "George Clooney pranks,' since it might be a really family based atmosphere because we'd a ten-year-old. But we wound up getting plenty of practical jokes, like the fart application around the telephone can come out. That appears just like a really lame George Clooney joke, really. Usually they're elaborate. A fart application sounds quite disappointing. We was without any typical George Clooney pranks. Listen, he's doing all people good pranks on like 'Oceans Eleven' and movie such as this -- where it's him and all of his pals. How do you describe your character, Alexandra? Ornery? In my opinion she's obtuse. Do you want her? Yeah. I'm speaking about, In my opinion she's an regular 17-year-old staring at the disorder from the products it's enjoy getting a family group. Families is dysfunctional, whether you have to be honest or else. Can you consider honours season? Um ... no. I'm speaking about, yes and ... I am unsure. It's strange. Everyone today is similar to, "Shailene, you are receiving a great deal buzz. How can the sensation? In . It's the most odd question as it is like asking a kid who experienced Cornell the actual way it feels being the very best your class at one of the Ivy League schools. How will you answer that? You just go, "I am unsure.Inch Used to do formerly condition that situation the maraschino cherry on top, but made a decision maraschino cherries are awful. And So I am prone to begin immediately preaching the Bing cherry on top. Maraschino cherries are tasty. They're so full of artificial chemicals! I realize they're dangerous for you, nevertheless the chemicals are what's tasty. OK, they could be tasty, but they're so dangerous towards the atmosphere. Should you have a sundae, are you able to favour an authentic cherry around the maraschino cherry? Oh, an authentic cherry. Certainly. But, yeah, I'm just forever grateful and taking my way through stride. You have to go all in, "Goddammit, I'd like an award." [Laughs] Honestly, it's flattering. Because it relates lower in it, I'm merely a girl who wears people five-finger strange feet shoes. You're on 'The O.C.' as Kaitlin Cooper. You're transformed by Willa Holland. Perhaps you have consider that the setback? No. I used to be 11 which i had been on just like a guest, recurring character, or whatever. My character visited boarding school then when they made a decision to produce her back, they re-auditioned me to produce her back. However I didn't undergo adolescence until late: I used to be the 15-year-old who did not have breasts. So, at 11, I used to be as being a little mouse-child. I made an appearance as though an 8-year-old. That same year, I shot a movie through which I used to be playing a 9-year-old. So, there's no weirdness when Willa Holland first first got it because she am clearly appropriate for that role... which i'm clearly not [laughs]. Rooney Mara Talks 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Transformation

Some actors mentally transform into their roles for a movie, but "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" star Rooney Mara had to do it physically. The last time Mara appeared in a film (appropriately David Fincher's "The Social Network"), she had long, luscious brown hair and a very girl-next-door overall vibe. But no longer. Mara and Fincher open up to Entertainment Weekly in this week's issue and talk about how the prestigious director told his leading lady right up front that she was going to have to change a lot for the role. "I told Rooney, 'You're going to be emaciated, you have to be naked, you have to get raped [on screen], get pierced, smoke cigarettes, ride a motorcycle,'" Fincher recalled saying. "'I need you to really concentrate and tell me this is something you want.'" Spoiler alert: it was. Since, Mara has had her hair chopped off -- "hairstylist Danilo Dixon pulled Maras lovely brown hair back into a braid, asked if she was ready, and squeezed the scissors. He handed her the foot-long twist in a Ziploc bag (she still has it)" -- and has received eyebrow, ears and nipple piercings. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't the change in her physical appearance or prospect of revealing all on the big screen that terrified her, but the prospect of riding a motorcycle. There were certainly things I was scared to do, but I never thought I wasn't up for the challenge," she said. "The motorcycle was the thing I really didnt want to do. You know, you're going to be raped, be naked... But as soon as he was like, 'Youre going to have to ride a motorcycle,' I was like, 'Oh, really?'" Despite the backlash to the fact that Fincher is adapting a novel that already has a beloved Swedish adaptation and that his Lisbeth Salander might be too "weak" (as people criticized the provocative teaser poster that was released earlier this year), Fincher is confident that his film is going to be everything fans want it to be. "We've got something very simple to deliver on," he said. "A gigantic f---ing book that people have very rigid preconceived notions of, to the point that they actually take umbrage with a teaser poster." Are you excited to see Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

Self-funded, self-distribbed drama should attract the positive person to person and critical kudos to broaden its release from one Gotham screen on November. 4. Surely the very first film a good Asian-American guy involved with a same-sex relationship in Tennessee, the storyplot recalls the social realism of John Cassavetes with lengthy consumes which silence and also the faces of individuals in emotional discomfort are as potent as words. Pic's stationary-camera aesthetic and naturalistic tone are carefully established within the opening images showing Joey Williams (Wang) participating in wonderful morning have fun with Nick (Sebastian Brodziak), a lively 6-year-old. Gradually, it's says Joey's lengthy-term partner is Chip's biological father, schoolteacher Cody Hines (Trevor St. John), who's shortly after that wiped out within an offscreen vehicle accident. 'Ides Of March' Star Ryan Gosling Won't 'Fracture' In Today's Sick Day Stash

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. These are some of ours. Ryan Gosling will complete his cinematic hat trick this weekend with the political drama "The Ides of March," playing a hungry press secretary on the campaign trail with George Clooney's earnest presidential candidate, Mike Morris. The film, based on the Beau Willimon play "Farragut North," is getting the kind of approval rating a world leader would kill for, but before you slap down your $10 and load up on the Junior Mints, I suggest you check out another of Gosling's intrigues, 2007's "Fracture." In fact, I'd call the underrated crime drama a companion piece of sorts to "Ides of March." I mean, after the events of "Fracture," I could totally see Gosling's Willy Beachum eschewing the district attorney's office in favor of a political position supporting a man he believes could change the country. But I'm getting ahead of myself. As I alluded to, "Fracture" follows Gosling as hot-shot deputy district attorney Beachum, who's been tasked with a seemingly open-and-shut case: the prosecution of Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins), who admitted to shooting his wife. But the attempted murder case (predictably) doesn't go as planned. For one, the arresting officer ("Twilight"'s Billy Burke) was having an affair with the victim and assaulted Crawford upon arrest. For another, Crawford's gun does not match the murder weapon. Defending himself, Crawford goes up against cocksure Beachum and is acquitted. It'd be easy for Beachum to forget about this failure (one of very few), considering he's been tapped for a posh position at a corporate law firm. But much like a detective who's flagged a case on the day of his retirement, Beachum can't shake Crawford's win in court. In a series of twists and turns (that I won't reveal here as they'd give away the satisfying finale), Beachum finally realizes Crawford hasn't committed the perfect crime and sets about ensnaring his greatest antagonist. With a darkly playful cat-and-mouse setup and plenty of imaginative lawyering, "Fracture" is the kind of feature that "Law and Order" fans will eat up with a spoon. To be sure, it isn't quite on par with my favorite Anthony Hopkins thriller, "The Silence of the Lambs," but it's not a stretch to call Gosling and Hopkins the latter-day Starling and Lecter. Their chemistry is just that good. Tell us about your Sick Day Stash picks in the comments section and on Twitter!

Enlightened (Series; HBO)

Laura Dern and Luke Wilson in HBO's "Enlightened" Credits: Filmed in Los Angeles and Hawaii by Rip Cord. Executive producers, Mike White, Laura Dern; co-executive producers, Miguel Arteta, Edward Saxon; producers, David Bernad, Jason Weinberg, Timothy Marx; co-producer, Gianna Smart; writer-director, White; story by White, Dern.Amy Jellicoe - Laura Dern Levi - Luke Wilson Helen - Diane Ladd Krista - Sarah Burns Dougie - Timm Sharp Judy - Amy Hill Tyler - Mike WhiteShowtime has excelled at a certain kind of attention-getting half-hour -- high-concept series featuring big-name female leads, with themes (cancer; drug abuse; multiple personalities) that practically market themselves. By contrast, it's hard to think of a lower concept than HBO's "Enlightened," an offbeat showcase for Laura Dern that, after watching four episodes, still isn't completely clear regarding its intentions. In the hands of writer/co-star Mike White, that's not entirely bad, but the unorthodox tone and emotionally fragile protagonist suggest this strange journey of self-discovery will harbor narrow appeal even by pay TV's refined standards. Dern's Amy has a jaw-dropping meltdown at work in the opening moments, having been transferred from her job at a big corporation after an affair gone wrong with her married boss (Timm Sharp). An idyllic, life-changing interlude at a counseling retreat in Hawaii follows, where she cavorts with sea turtles, finds inner-peace and begins soothingly narrating her own spiritual reclamation. "I will change. And I will be an agent of change," Amy says in voiceover, following her epiphany. Upon her return, though, Amy's harmony is tested time and again. Her former assistant (Sarah Burns) has been promoted, while she's been relegated to the bowels of the company, surrounded by other losers (among them one played by White). Her ex-husband (Luke Wilson), while mostly sympathetic, doesn't want to do much but sit around smoking pot; and her mom (Diane Ladd, Dern's real-life mother) looks at her like she just beamed down from the Enterprise. Can Amy maintain her new-found serenity and find -- or maintain -- the peace she professes to have achieved, especially within a conglomerate that cares not a whit about her? White seems determined to test that point, with Amy's unnervingly upbeat exterior (which recalls the religiously converted in Michael Tolkin's "The Rapture") occasionally giving way to fits of rage that suggest her New Age transformation hasn't fully taken hold. One can see why Dern (who shares story credit with White) was drawn to the role -- and perhaps even why HBO would gamble on somebody as famously idiosyncratic as the director, whose indie-film sensibility (see "Chuck & Buck" and "The Good Girl") has pay-TV written all over it. That said, it's difficult to ascertain for whom "Enlightened" is intended, simultaneously mocking and exalting the self-help movement, without really indicating precisely where it stands. By that measure, the show's ethereal qualities are interesting in places but never particularly enlightening, and its pairing with HBO's quirky but significantly broader "Bored to Death" -- in the latest attempt to expand the channel's original-series footprint to Monday nights -- feels like an especially low-wattage combination. Ultimately, "Enlightened" sets up its own quixotic quest -- the long uphill slog of building a series around making the audience uncomfortable. Personal growth might be in the cards for Dern's damaged heroine. Changing the laws of TV gravity is probably another matter entirely.Camera, Lawrence Sher; production designer, Richard Hoover; editor, Rob Frazen; music, Carter Burwell; casting, Cami Patton, Jennifer Lare. 30 MIN. The Dark Knight Rises: Batcave details and police chase video

It's great to hear that we'll get to see the Batcave again in The Dark Knight Rises but it may not be that much of a surprise if a report from the Sony Studios set is to be believed.A fan at Batman-News.com claims to have wandered around the new Batcave and says not much has changed."It's half finished and pretty much looks like the same set we saw in Batman Begins. They're still completing the quarry walls but the wooden manor foundations were all there in the corner. They may add more set dressing with equipment and such but don't expect a radical redesign as most fanboys are expecting," the report reads.Hang on, you might be thinking, that still sounds very unfinished. So what did the construction guys have to say?"Funny thing was I asked the construction guys if they were using the same blueprints/plans from Batman Begins to match continuity, they said, 'No'. But as the set resembled the cave from Begins and I'm a detail freak who knows the movies, (right down to the waterfall entrance where the tumbler flies through) while they may have had new blueprints I could see it was the same cave from seeing the foundation beams that were iconic from the first movie. Also the stage can hold water, they'll fill it when the quarry wall work is finished and they pull all the rigging lights up to illuminate the set."To be honest, you won't see toys flying from TF's pram if the Batcave happens to look a bit familiar.Especially as we've got this snippet of a police chase to keep our Bat-spirits up.Unless this is really a remake ofThe Blues Brothers, in which case where's our log-in to Blues-Brothers-news.com? We've got some bile to spew!

Is 'Glee' Past Its Prime on the Music Charts?

The return of Glee to the small screen naturally brings the return of the Glee cast to the Billboard Hot 100, as well as an extension of the troupe's record for most entries in the chart's history.our editor recommendsWhy the 'Glee' Season Three Premiere Took a Ratings Dive (Analysis)'Glee' Season 3 Back to School Pictures Released (Photos) PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 3: Back to School Pictures The Fox ensemble sends three songs onto the Hot 100 from the series' Sept. 20 third-season premiere: "It's Not Unusual" (No. 65), a remake of Tom Jones' first Hot 100 hit (No. 10) from 1965; "You Can't Stop the Beat" (No. 67), from the musical "Hairspray"; and, "We Got the Beat" (No. 83), which spent three weeks at No. 2 for the Go-Go's in 1982. With the bows, the Glee student singers pull even further ahead of Elvis Presley for the most charted titles in the Hot 100's archives. The cast has tallied 159 chart entries, ahead of runner-up Presley's 108 (with his career having predated the Hot 100's Aug. 4, 1958, inception). While the Glee ensemble is at the head of the class for most Hot 100 visits, are the act's grades slipping when it comes to their chart fortunes? PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of Emmy Contender Glee's 'Rumours' Episode The cast's top-charting song this week ("Unusual") bows at No. 65 on the strength of 40,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. By comparison, the top track from last year's second-season opener, the cast's cover of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind," began at No. 21 on the Hot 100 with sales of 106,000. In all, five Glee tracks debuted a year ago this week, all between Nos. 21 and 51, totaling sales of 409,000. This week, the download sales of the three debuting Glee tracks sold approximately one-quarter that amount (106,000). That's a pretty significant drop. PHOTOS: Fall TV Preview 2011: The Returning Shows Two more season-premiere singles even just missed this week's Hot 100 cut: "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead" and "Anything Goes/Anything You Can Do" each sold 21,000 and enter at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, on the Hot 100's Bubbling Under chart. (The five season-opening downloads sold 149,000). What could be behind the comparatively diminished interest in new Glee music this season as compared to last year? Let's brainstorm some possibilities. (Eyes on the board, spit out that gum and no starting your own show choir). Music selection: Based on this season's start, Glee is offering more Broadway and less mainstream pop music. Last season opened with the hip-hop sounds of "Empire State of Mind," as well as covers of then-recent dance/pop hits "Telephone" (Lady Gaga and Beyonce) and "Billionaire" (Travie McCoy). The following week, Glee paid tribute to Britney Spears, with five Spears songs from the episode subsequently reaching the Hot 100. This season's first two episodes, however, have featured selections from the likes of Hairspray and, this week, West Side Story (with "Somewhere" featuring Broadway veteran Idina Menzel). In "Unusual" and "We Got the Beat," the pop radio remakes have recalled not now, but 1965 and 1982. The show's penchant for show tunes stems from Glee creator Ryan Murphy, who, approximating the role of a McKinley High music professor, told the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that "a lot of that stuff isn't taught. Or, the young audience is not exposed to it." While such a musical menu enriches a young audience's musical palette, it can also make for a tougher path to Hot 100 success. The youthful viewers that can most relate to the Glee characters are likely less familiar with decades-old songs, especially those that never received widespread radio play. Thus, they may be less inclined to purchase those songs digitally. Ratings: The third-season Glee opener was down 32 percent in audience compared to last fall's premiere, although it still drew a solid 8.9 million viewers. The Sept. 20 debut of the quirky Zooey Deschanel comedy New Girl following Glee logged an even higher total (10 million) than its lead-in. Perhaps the novelty of (the heavily-promoted) New Girl plays into a possible Glee glut: after two years (Glee premiered May 19, 2009), viewers, and, thus, music consumers, overexposed to Glee in its multi-media forms may be less stimulated by each new element of the series' product line. The season premiere's ratings dip was even seemingly forecasted just a month earlier when Glee: the 3D Concert Movie opened to a mere $5.7 million at the U.S. box office. (The film has grossed $11.8 million total, hardly a mark worth pinning on the refrigerator). A decrease in viewers, naturally, translates to fewer potential Gleeks downloading the series' musical souvenirs. PHOTOS: 'Glee' Takes NYC: Behind the Scenes Second (-season) guessing: What's behind the Glee ratings slip? Industry insiders and the blogosphere tend to point to a second season shorter on the more focused storytelling and character development of the series' first season. The show's sophomore season also splintered the cast, with the main New Directions glee club sharing time - and song selections - with Darren Criss' Warblers. Still, Fox is counting on Glee to remain a programming cornerstone. "I think, frankly, some of (the backlash) was inevitable," Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly theorized to THR. "When you are burning that hot on anything, sooner or later there's going to be the other side of it. "There were a lot of things (that Glee) tried last season, some of which worked fantastically, others that felt like a little bit of a dead end or a dropped ball. But, what we've heard consistently is: 'I love the core characters. Can we just get back to them?' That's what you're going to see this season." Clearly, Glee has stormed the Hot 100 like no other act, taking advantage of a loyal viewership and the digital era to produce multiple chart entries week after week in-season. The cast's music having toppled the King of Rock and Roll's long-standing record for most Hot 100 hits in less than two years reinforces the series' chart clout, as do its 11 consecutive top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, including three No. 1s. Combined, Glee has sold 26.7 million downloads and 6.1 million albums, according to SoundScan. Taking music choices, the series' ratings and plot arcs into account, what will the future impact of Glee be on Billboard charts? Stay tuned. Utah Theater Fined for Showing Sexually-Explicit Hangover Part II

The Hangover Part II may have been wildly popular everywhere else in the world — in part thanks to the sexually-suggestive shenanigans its heroes get involved in, transvestite genitals and all — but there’s one place where those hijinks don’t fly: Utah. Good old morally-stringent Utah, where one theater was fined $1,627 for screening the R-rated blockbuster comedy on account of its “attire and conduct violations.” (That’s $400 more than what a local restaurant was fined for serving alcohol to a minor, by comparison.) The Brewvies Cinema Pub is a Salt Lake City theater that serves beer in movie screenings, which is how they got popped; under the jurisdiction of Utah’s strict liquor laws, the pub is subject to Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control rules against mixing alcohol with “certain sex acts and full frontal nudity.” And boy, does The Hangover Part II have plenty of both. From the Salt Lake Tribune: The Utah Highway Patrol’s liquor enforcement team conducted the sting against Brewvies in June at the request of the liquor-control department, said UHP spokesman Dwayne Baird. The liquor department’s request was based on a complaint by a strip club that it had been cited for sexually explicit violations while Brewvies was getting away with showing equally explicit films. Thanks a lot, strip club guys! [Salt Lake Tribune via CinemaBlend]

ABC ABC launched its All My Children replacement, lifestyle series The Chew, on Monday to 2.5 million total viewers, a larger opener than the 2.2 million who tuned in to the first episode of CBS' The Talk. During the summer Television Critics Assoc. press tour in early August, the hosts and producer of The Chew defended their show to a roomful of reporters. "We hope that [soap fans] enjoy our show," said executive producer Gordon Elliot. "We were asked to come adn join the daytime lineup because the daytime tastes have changed. Really we're just [filling] a need that was already there. We would love the soap fans to share a little bit of us." Kelly, who also co-hosts TLC's What Not to Wear, said, "People tune in to soaps because they feel the casts are their friends. ... We can't be soap operas but we can be a group of people you can hang out with." Rachesky, leader of MHR Fund Management LLC, decided to pay $77 million to purchase one fourth of Icahn's stock at $7 a share included in the settlement.Rachesky, who had labored with Icahn before striking out by himself, had consistently backed Lionsgate management throughout the bitter three-year fight with Icahn.Lionsgate drawn on Rachesky for that board 2 yrs ago included in its slate after Icahn have been rebuffed in efforts to achieve seats about the panel. At that time, Rachesky possessed 19.8% of Lionsgate and changed Mark Amin about the board. In This summer, 2010, Rachesky was at the middle of what grew to become a vital dispute with Icahn inside a $100 million debt-for-equity deal as Icahn was trying to consider over the organization via a number of hostile tender offers. The transaction reduced Icahn's stake from 37% to 33% and increased Rachesky's holdings to 29%. The Rachesky deal triggered law suit by Icahn, who alleged the minimajor's management and board was underhanded and less than professional while Lionsgate frequently described Icahn like a meddler having a poor history of trading in entertainment companies. The fight with Icahn started ebbing last December when Lionsgate effectively survived a spirited proxy fight with Icahn. The August. 30 accord permitted Icahn to interrupt even by selling his 33% stake in the organization at $7 a be part of a number of deals amassing about $309 million. ABC runs spread offense for 2011-12

With a dozen series to launch during the 2011-12 season, ABC entertainment president Paul Lee is mindful of the perils of fall premieres: The only frosh ABC series of 2010-11 that survived was "Body of Proof," a show Lee moved off the fall schedule and into midseason." 'Body of Proof' didn't have a lot of buzz, but we knew it was great and we wanted to protect it because we could give it a real launch after the Oscars," Lee says.Says "Proof" star Dana Delany: "Paul saved us. We would've been lost in the fall glut."That strategy has led to him holding back the cheeky soap "GCB" (formerly "Good Christian Belles" and, before that, "Good Christian Bitches") to midseason, even though it boasts a lot of buzz."Shows like 'GCB,' (thriller) 'The River' and (sitcom) 'Apartment 23' are all superb in their own way, but they need their space," Lee says. "We can find a moment and throw the network at it, whether it's using the Oscars or Christmas to launch them."Lee understands the danger inherent in a glut of series debuting in late September. "We clearly think a staggered fall is important," he says. "We'll launch our dramas first, then comedies a couple of weeks later, then 'Once Upon a Time' around Halloween, when we can use our launched shows to help it."We haven't said, 'Let's put all our best shows up front.' We've scheduled them all the way through the year to give us a good chance to get these shows going and get some momentum behind them."Though Lee believes his scheduling strategy is sound, he admits, "You never know. It sounds good now. But I've done this long enough to know that you're going to stumble and fall." SPOTLIGHT"Once Upon a Time"Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis ("Lost") created this fantasy about fairy-tale characters stranded in mysterious Storybrooke, ruled by a wicked queen (Lana Parrilla). The characters don't realize their true identities; they live as 9-to-5 drudges. Even ethereal Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin of "Big Love") is merely a timid teacher.Cynical skip-tracer Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison, "House") -- secretly, Snow White's daughter -- is summoned to Storybrooke by a boy claiming to be her son (Jared Gilmore). She's skeptical, yet senses something sinister in the town.Juxtaposing flashbacks to the fairy-tale world with life in Storybrooke, such a series could only come from "Lost" alumni, who insist reversing the spell is not a high priority.Even Morrison's no-nonsense character comes around. "She's thinking, 'How can I get this taken care of so I can get on with my life?' " Morrison says. "And there's a turning point where she realizes that she cannot separate herself from her son, which is what keeps her there." NEW FOR 2011-12"Charlie's Angels"Miami-based reboot of the '70s camp classic about three kick-ass women (now played by Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh) who right wrongs as assigned by the disembodied voice of Charlie. Ramon Rodriguez co-stars as helpmate Bosley. "Last Man Standing""Home Improvement" mainstay Tim Allen returns to TV as a man's man in a household cluttered with women-folk, for whom testosterone-fueled insights don't always serve as palliatives. How will he survive the estrogen overload? Nancy Travis and Hector Elizondo co-star. "Man Up"Three immature men (Mather Zickel, Danny Fogler and series creator Christopher Moynihan) try to make sense of a world that has seemingly emasculated them. Teri Polo, Henry Simmons and Amanda Detmer co-star; critically admired Victor Fresco ("Better Off Ted") serves as executive producer. "Pan Am""Mad Men" on a plane, with spies. Christina Ricci ("The Addams Family") headlines this '60s-era ensemble melodrama about an international flight crew -- pilots and flight attendants alike -- who traverse the globe with love and espionage in tow. "Revenge"Emily Van Camp ("Everwood") plays a young woman returning to the Hamptons, keen on meting out justice to everyone who helped destroy her father. It's a long list, with Madeleine Stowe's Victoria Grayson at the top, but she's saving the worst for last. "Suburgatory"Quirky sitcom about Tessa (Jane Levy), a precociously witty teen wrested by her protective single father (Jeremy Sisto) from Manhattan to the ostensibly safer environs of suburbia. Which, naturally, Tessa initially loathes. Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") co-stars. "Work It"Where to start with this one? Two men (Ben Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco), victim of the down economy, dress in drag to land gigs as pharmaceutical reps. Though they're obviously guys, their female colleagues are oblivious to their subterfuge. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Malick picks his next leading lady

Terrence Malick's shown taste for unknown female leads has lifted the careers of Sissy Spacek and Jessica Chastain, and today he's selected his next femme, who'll join the helmer's untitled project with Christian Bale. Malick is writing and pointing the project, even though no deal continues to be struck, sources tell Variety the auteur makes up his mind regarding who definitely are in next summer's scheduled shoot. Variety reported earlier Thursday that Hayley Bennett was the main one, but sources now say another candidate could close the offer. Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson Mine Mid-Life Crises For Comedy in The Big Year Trailer

“We just need a little adventure. […] A big year to do everything we never could,” explain the trio of lead characters in the trailer for David Frankel’s The Big Year. Because 365 days worth of adventure-seeking and ticking off bucket-list items will surely drive the crises right out of Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson. And at the very least, that “big year” will give the comedic actors a reason to goof around on skis, forge meaningful bonds and, most likely, realize that the cure to their middle-aged woes have been in plain view the entire time. Or am I missing the plot entirely? Apparently, I am. Because in spite of the trailer that pitches The Big Year as The Great Outdoors meets Planes, Trains & Automobiles meets Jack Black eating pretzels in his underwear, there is a narrative that exceeds three guys palling around in windbreakers. Specifically, The Big Year is about three men obsessed with birdwatching (Martin, Black and Wilson) who embark on a year-long challenge to find the most species of birds in North America. Understandably, 20th Century Fox buried that narrative deep, deep, deep in the trailer, but how will they manage to distract audiences from that plot come October? Regardless, outdoors man fun! A great cast (Anjelica Huston, Rashida Jones, Rosamund Pike, Dianne Wiest, Jim Parsons, Anthony Anderson and Joel McHale)! Steve Martin and Jack Black, together in a kayak at last! Look for the Ben Stiller-produced Big Year in theaters October 14. VERDICT: To paraphrase The Big Year’s tag line: Everyone is searching for something… but nobody is looking for a birdwatching buddy comedy.

Australian Human Centipede 2 Teaser Alleges Cuts in U.S. Version; Distrib Isn't Talking (Yet) -- UPDATED with First Image

Last anyone heard from team Human Centipede, led by the redoubtable, utterly demented filmmaker Tom Six, the third film in the series was eyeing a U.S. setting. Those plans might go south depending on whether or not Six and Co. can even get the controversial Human Centipede Part 2: Full Sequence screened uncut and uncensored when it opens Stateside next month — an inevitability that a new, NSFW Australian teaser wouldn’t have you count on. Several requests for comment from representatives for IFC Films, which opens The Human Centipede Part 2 on Oct. 7, have gone unanswered, while another representative vaguely explained that an official statement may be forthcoming Wednesday morning. That is not what I’d call an encouraging development for fans looking forward to the sequel that was infamously banned in the UK in June; usually, when faced with a galvanizing piece of work like Six’s, a specialty distributor runs with any and all scandal it can harness. It does not shrink away while some schmucks halfway around the world control the conversation with their own marketing campaign. Speaking of which, here’s the video — basically a succession of reaction shots from actors viewers supposedly checking the new film out in the back of a mobile screening unit. All you get from Centipede 2 itself are sound effects, which you’ll find is likely enough. [via Twitch] UPDATE: IFC Midnight has released the first Human Centipede 2 image, a still of the the sequel’s British villain (Laurence R. Harvey). Talk about changing the conversation. Is Harvey’s bug-eyed mug enough to deflect attention away from the speculation of an American re-edit? Well, just take a look (via Entertainment Weekly): Yup. Pretty effective.

Anderson & Constantin: Partnership results in B.O. bounty

Jeremy Bolt, Paul W.S. Anderson and Ray Stevenson, about the group of 'The Three Musketeers three dimensional,' which Constantin is producting.Though their partnership formally started in 2001, inside a strange way the connection between Paul W.S. Anderson and Constantin began together with his first pic, "Shopping," in 1994. The film triggered debate in the native U.K. over its violent dystopian style, which did not do Anderson worthwhile in your own home, but introduced him and the producer Jeremy Bolt to Hollywood to evolve the videogame Mortal Kombat, starting off its franchise. " 'Shopping' demonstrated lots of action and youthful rebellion," Bolt states. "It got a great deal of attention and demonstrated a want to make American-style movies."Some years later, Anderson knocked into Bernd Eichinger, then mind of Constantin, who saw "Shopping" in a German film festival and was impressed. "I'd designed a small British art movie, however i wanted an amazing opening because I needed so that it is motion picture at any given time after i felt British cinema wasn't," Anderson states. "And we'd exhaust money and so i spent my entire director's fee to complete each one of these helicopter shots. And the very first time I met Bernd, he stated, 'As soon when i saw individuals helicopter shots at the beginning of your movie, I understood you had been a filmmaker I needed to utilize.A "Because the ink was drying out about the contract, Anderson had become enthusiastic about a videogame known as Resident Evil, and was wanting to adapt it for that bigscreen. He and Bolt asked concerning the privileges only to discover that they been offered 2 yrs earlier. To Constantin."It had been an extremely happy coincidence throughout,Inch states Anderson. "As (our shingle) Impact, we'd just done some pot-venture cope with them, they'd a house that they been developing unsuccessfully, and that i arrived with passion and to breathe new existence in it. Therefore it was ready to go.InchThese days the partnership has proven effective. The three dimensional "Resident Evil: Afterlife" was Constantin's first global No. 1 movie, and "Three Musketeers," additionally a three dimensional film, may be the greatest movie they have available. Anderson is going to shoot the 5th "Resident Evil" in three dimensional and the next project, "Pompeii," also in three dimensional, needs to become a great deal larger. However with "Three Musketeers," Anderson has already been firming lower the violence in support of action and wishing to achieve a wider family-friendly audience. "Previously we have been quite effective in striking boys and males, and you want to expand that market now and attract women too,Inch Bolt states. While not prepared to announce, Anderson and Bolt appear at first sight developing numerous projects with Anderson focusing on pointing maybe one large-scale film each year and Bolt searching to create additional films through the organization."We are searching at top quality high-finish genre projects," Bolt states, "movies will be able to elevate to seem like A-movies, but possess some brand awareness. Now Paul might not wish to perform a horror film again or perhaps a straight action movie again, to ensure that may be a place where we may use another director. And I must use some more youthful company directors who does take advantage of Paul's experience -- getting him as producer."Our desire is clearly to construct Impact with Constantin," Bolt adds, "and also to increase Constantin's success and sustain it. Because in my opinion, just based on development, they are very filmmaker-friendly and there's a household atmosphere."Anderson concurs. "The one thing I love about dealing with Constantin is, and then any film director would understand why, I cope with Martin Moszkowicz, Robert Kulzer and that is it. There's only the four people and when all of us love something, we go for this. There is no someone to stop us and there is nobody to keep us back, which enables us to operate really fast."When it comes to the connection with Constantin," he concludes, "when I finish 'Pompeii,' I'll have completely finished four straight movies with similar creative team, exactly the same distributor -- this is a hell of the run, even when you do not estimate another four 'Resident Evil' movies and the rest of the films we made together. And So I feel totally fortunate to become for the reason that relationship. "Among the best stuff that ever happened in my experience was Bernd Eichinger seeing my movie." 'The Help': Judge Tosses Lawsuit Claiming Character Stolen From Real-Life Maid

DreamworksEmma Stone, left, and Viola Davis in "The Help" The Help author just got a little assistance from a Mississippi judge. Katherine Stockett, who wrote the book on which the hit movie about maids and their employers in the1960s South is based, on Tuesday was granted summary judgment in a lawsuit brought by a woman who claimed Stockett used her likeness without permission. Ablene Cooper, a maid in Jackson, Miss., claimed the character Aibileen (played by Viola Davis in the film) was based on her. But Judge Tomie Green has dismissed the case based on a one-year statute of limitations that elapsed between when Stockett gave Cooper a copy of the book and when the lawsuit was filed. Cooper had sought $75,000 in damages. The case is somewhat ironic given that the plot of The Help centers around a controversial book written by a young white woman about a group of anonymous black maids who are mistreated in white homes. Here, Stockett, a white woman from Jackson, Miss., was accused of misappropriating the identity of a black maid to write a book about mistreated black maids. Cooper claims big similarities between her and the Aibileen character (besides the names). She lost a son before working for Stockett's brother, for instance. Outside the courtroom in Mississippi today, Cooper is said to have wiped away tears and screamed at reporters as her lawyer said he is considering an appeal. "She's a liar," Cooper said, according to Fox News. "She did it. She knows she did it." Email: Matthew.Belloni@thr.com Twitter: @THRMattBelloni Viola Davis The Help

Having a cast and director like this, it's really no great surprise that people were pretty damn chuffed to possess a number of them along to Giant Screen a few days ago, including perennial Empire favourite Mark Strong. The plot from the film centres around criminal mastermind Mark Strong squaring served by policeperson James McAvoy, with heists, gunfights and vehicle chases starting off almost every other scene - approximately it may sound.... It does not glorify it though, it likes a juxtaposition between arthouse examination and all sorts of-out action. " . "It comes with some good action sequences, mind. A couple of days following the movie began shooting, I truly realized I had been within an action movie when i was obtaining an uzi, sliding on the ground. I am talking about, I have beaten up twelve-year-old women (in Kick-Ass), but this really is different. Anticipate an enormous final gun fight round the docks, incidentally..." . "After Shifty, my first film," Creevy added, "I wish to perform a French Connection, or perhaps a Warmth, an Infernal Matters, Hard Boiled-style film, but occur London. I needed so that it is aspirational, make London clever - allow it to be all glass chrome, highrises, and nuanced performances. " . "Essentially, London is among the most sexy metropolitan areas on the planet and it is not proven like this in films correctly, so we are attempting to do good to exhibit that. "We'll have the ability to decide if they have drawn them back come sometime 2012. You realize, with Thanks For Visiting The Punch being released then and all sorts of....

Weekend Receipts: All Hail Our Monkey Overlords - Or, How Can You Like Them Bananas?

Well, that forms it — America loves apes! Well, a lot more compared to they love Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman and poop jokes. So let’s welcome our new simian masters and celebrate what a few days ago’s box office amounts mean: A) Apes > everything, B) R-ranked comedies need to go the extra mile, and C) so Harrison Ford and Difficulties if they would like to get back the crown from individuals damn, dirty Smurfs. Your weekend box office is here now! 1. Rise from the Planet from the Apes Gross: $54,000,000 (new) Screens: 3,648 (PSA: $14,803) Days: 1 Similar to last weekend’s surprising Smurfs versus. Cowboys & Aliens shake-up, Fox’s primate reboot demonstrated an unexpected contender, handily beating the R-ranked (and abysmally-examined) star-driven The Modification-Up. Whether from strong person to person — especially where Andy Serkis’s mo-assigned, maybe Oscar-worthy performance was concerned — or even the yearning for any good, old-fashioned summer time action yarn, Rise from the Planet from the Apes exceeded pundit anticipation, raking in $19.75M on Friday alone. Performs this mean the Apes could rise again and effectively reboot a brand new franchise series? Our guess: Fight from the Conquest from the Go back to the earth from the Apes, visiting you in 2013. 2. The Smurfs Gross: $21,000,000 ($76,202,000) Screens: 3,395 (PSA: $6,186) Days: 2 (change: -41.%) Cowboys & Aliens might have won last weekend’s box office with a nose, however the Smurfs got their revenge on Difficulties and Harrison Ford within their second week, tugging ahead within the epic, storied struggle between Smurfkind and Mission Impossible/Indiana Johnson having a $21M showing. Which brings Peyo’s little blue masterpieces to some Smurfy $76.6M domestic cume, in comparison to C&A’s $67.3M. 3. Cowboys & Aliens Gross: $15,748,000 ($67,368,000) Screens: 3,754 (PSA: $4,195) Days: 2 (change: -56.8%) Jon Favreau’s genre-blender experienced the greatest drop from Week 1 — but maybe that’s what you'll get for beheading Papa Smurf on tv (Searching to you, Harrison), just a little box office karma coming back ‘round. Or possibly America wised up and considered Movieline’s handy flow chart, discovering that more streets pointed to seeing The Smurfs. In either case, C&A’s still got the worldwide marketplaces to spread out, and Harrison’s huge in Japan. A round of Kirin Lager beer for everybody! 4. The Modification-Up Gross: $13,502,000 (new) Screens: 2,913 (PSA: $4,635) Days: 1 Permit this to be considered a lesson to Hollywood: Poop jokes and Ryan Reynolds’ abs aren’t enough to spread out a film. Neglecting to open within the summer time of Bridesmaids, The Hangover Part II, and Bad Teacher (while making under 1 / 2 of what Buddies with Benefits did in the first weekend, believe it or not), informs you much. And what’s with using a lot CGI nudity within an R-ranked comedy?? The Modification-Up should appear and disappear just like a blip about the summer time movie schedule, showing that even just in the summer time from the adult comedy movies need to have something to provide. 5. Captain America: The Very First Avenger Gross: $13,000,000 ($143,182,000) Screens: 3,620 (PSA: $3,591) Days: 3 (change: -49.1%) A 49.1% drop from a week ago didn’t help Captain America in the box office competition with fellow Marvel super hero pic Thor (Captain_ arrived just $2.2M under Thor’s week three amounts) but don’t lose belief, America! With $100.3M notched to date, Cap’s foreign allies are obtaining the slack. [Amounts via Box Office Mojo]
