SAG pushes merger as vote nears
Members of the Screen Actors Guild can count on a push to approve a merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists during the next three weeks as the March 30 balloting deadline nears. Merger backers are asserting that the SAG-AFTRA combo will increase bargaining strength and represent a first step toward solving the problem of performers not qualifiying for coverage under separate SAG and AFTRA health and pension plans. Backers of the combo are scrambling to avoid a repeat of the 2003 defeat, when SAG members spurned an AFTRA merger by a margin of only 1,280 votes -- or 2% short of the required 60% while 75% of AFTRA members supported the deal. The 2003 vote drew 54% of eligible SAG voters. "I'm confident that it's going to pass, particularly if we can get everyone to vote," said SAG First VP Ned Vaughn. "Actors are busy people so we're trying to persuade them to mail the ballots instead of letting them sit on their desks until it's too late." Vaughn said that pension and health remains the key concern raised by members. "I think we're making a real connection with members on that," he added. The SAG anti-merger forces have filed a lawsuit to block the vote count, alleging that the guild hasn't adhered to its rules in sending out the proposal to members. Opponents staged their fifth consective Thursday afternoon protest in front of the SAG headquarters in Hollywood, complaining that the combination will dilute the power of middle-class actors. The merger's been endorsed by over 2,050 members, including George Clooney, Robert DeNiro, Danny DeVito and Tom Hanks. Opponents alleged that the merger will benefit producers such as the quartet with the admonition "If it's good for producers, it's bad for actors." Vaughn said that argument amounts to "Balkanizing" SAG by excluding successful actors. "I think that's antithetical to the union movement," he added. "And it's not as if Tom Hanks need this merger to happen." SAG's been staging informational meetings around the country since ballots went out Feb. 27 with Wednesday's nights gathering at SAG headquarters drawing about 400. It's slotted a Saturday meet in Santa Fe, N.M., followed by Monday gatherings in NY City, Chicago and Cleveland, a March 15 meet in NY, a March 17 gathering in Los Angeles and March 19 meeting in San Diego and Southfield, Mich.; March 20 in Cincinnati; March 21 in Indianapolis and March 22 in Columbus, Ohio. Vaughn's one of the leaders of the Unite For Strength faction that's dominated SAG elections in recent years with a pro-merger message. He said the benefits of merging far outweigh the problems, adding, "It's easy to be a naysayer and pick at the details." SAG also send out a postcard to members this week with title "Keep your benefits safe by making us all stronger. Bargaining strength is the foundation of all union protections including health and pension/retirement benefits." A hearing has been set for March 26 in federal court in Los Angeles on the anti-merger suit filed by Martin Sheen and 60 other actors. The action alleges SAG and its leaders are attempting to merge "without conducting the necessary due diligence" while SAG has labeled the suit "a clear attempt at circumventing the will of the membership" and "a public relations stunt." Roush Review: Silence Might Have Been Golden within the Oscars
Cherie and Dork These were given stuck around the broken-lower bus, but married clowns Dork and Cherie Gregg were ultimately not-tied round the Amazing Race by... math. Designated with calculating the normal weight from the mind of cattle in the pen using extended division, Dork got so stuck the cattle were eventually removed out. "Not in the million years [did In my opinion we'd be removed because of math]! Not in $millions of even!" he notifies TVGuide.com. Why couldn't he decipher it? And what went lower for his or her bus? Uncover below.Amazing Race's Misa and Maiya: We didn't know very well what to look forDid you believe math would can you in? Cherie: Never! We're fans in the Race, and then we seen plenty of prior seasons then when it found math, we view people using hands hand calculators to change gold over. We'd a calculator, but i was not allowed for doing things. Which we did things just before the Race, like Brain Age, that have simple math, that have simple information, while not extended division.Dork: So when there has been any math tasks, i had been gonna have Cherie do them, nevertheless the clue mentioned, "Where's the beef?" I thought it had been an eating plan challenge, therefore i was ready to have a cow!Dork, possibly you've been bad at math or has it really been way too extended since you have carried out extended division?Dork: Both really. I'd trouble at school with math with my dyslexia. ... Used to do formerly reverse things. Which is been, like, 2 decades since i have have attempted extended division, when I desired to make it happen, I literally inverted the process and was dividing from to left rather than left to right. I merely saved carrying it out over and over again and may not determine what I used to be doing wrong. Which I didn't determine whether I used to be counting the cows wrong.Cherie: And nowadays, we use hands hand calculators, personal computers and smart phones to separate stuff. Plus, we are some of the earliest teams which is been a while since we've experienced school. The cows were also throughout each other, and that means you couldn't count well.Could it have been discouraging seeing them empty the cattle pen?Dork: Yeah, however understood I desired to persevere. Eventually they removed the bins and so they just provided different difficulties with different levels of cattle. I made a decision to check dividing left to right and voila! ... I didn't who's, nevertheless it needed a few several hours. I needed a relaxation, got a little water, walked back out of this but got into it.Cherie: I used to be so happy he wasn't crying or upset. It was not recuperating from anxiety. If you're blank, you're blank. He was joking around to relieve the strain. I understood it absolutely was disturbing him, but he wasn't getting upset round the outdoors, so when he did, I could have been crying.Perhaps you have figure you're last in those days?Cherie: Yeah, however i was wanting for just about any non-elimination. Then when we have arrived, we didn't determine whether the next bus had passed us. However, if they needed the cows away, i had been were enjoy, they'd not required the cows away if there has been more teams coming.Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan on premiere's crazy finish: It absolutely was most likely probably the most bizarre Pit Stop everDid you hear Andrew and Joey joining up and conspiring to help you escape?Gaga: I didn't. In those days, I used to be so tunnel-visioned on acquiring the mathematics right. They were getting trouble themselves and people request, "Why didn't you synergy together?Inch I felt appreciate it was the blind leading the blind. It was not a guess. It must be an exact number.Cherie: They made an appearance as though the three Stooges since they all elevated minimizing the steps with guesses. These were given a good deal wrong.Dork: After I figured of joining tabs on them, they were gone. What went lower along with your bus window?Dork: It absolutely was a double decker [bus], and downstairs it was subsequently really hot and upstairs was nice awesome there. ... [The attendant] came lower and shut lower the entire system and restarted it. The awesome air showed up downstairs plus an hour later, when the sun went lower, boom! We hear the snap in the window. Really the only factor I really could consider that happened maybe it was literally gave to the stress of thermodynamics and basically skyrocketed within the temperature changes.Cherie: I believed something hit [it]. ... Of the question shattered and blew in. Fortunately, the twins, who've been behind us, moved upstairs to awesome off because one of these simple wasn't feeling good. His brother then elevated to judge him, so fortunately they weren't present. Next, we're able to have no sleep because every hour . 5, riding on the bus would stop and tape of the question and you also would hear [the wind].Dork: It absolutely was an 18-hour bus ride which i was probably on for 22.Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan: You'd be crazy not to watch because of Large Brother's Brendon and RachelDo you think you could have been safe had that doesn't happened? Dork: In my opinion so. To tell the truth, I'd have experienced a lot more sleep! People do not understand that you're really running on fumes and adrenaline. You'll find occasions if you want to use that adrenaline and when you have to push it away. When you're in a task, you have to push it away. Why didn't the truth is the look in the cell inside your box within the Detour?Dork: Adrenaline! We have got the ultimate box, and then we just clicked up el born area ... and went for the last set-up area, which was the farthest up. We thought there'd be instructions inside, but there have been not, and then we just started up.Cherie: I had been the ultimate to achieve our area, but Dork thought to only fill the pot half way with water. It only required to whistle we was without make tea for 10! And then we were the second after that even though i had been last to achieve. So together we work effectively together. While not divided! No pun intended. What is happening now?Cherie: Still clowning around! We are the ambassadors of laughter for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey's Circus. Our next top is [Kentucky] and that we are wanting to obtain along with Bopper and Mark. I had been just in Mobile, Ala., which we're able to meet up with Kerri and Stacy. We will probably schools, libraries and hospitals and becoming free educational programs of a month just before the Circus involves town. And that we are simply being grateful for that lives and our opportunity to create our dream be realized while using Amazing Race.

'Star Wars' Fan To George Lucas: 'Stop Having Fun With My Yoda!'
The release date from the Exorcist: Episode I The Phantom Menace in 3-D originates and gone, as well as the news is not so competent for Mr. George Lucas. Even though film didnt exactly underperform within the opening weekend (it needed in $22.5 million), three other new films did better. fourth place: theres not just a medal for the. I cant condition that Im surprised most grownups who've already seen the film probably wouldnt decide to notice again, during 3-D. As well as the new generation of youthful moviegoers was likely depressed by Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Personally, there will not be any trip to the megaplex to check out Menace once again round the silver screen. But my avoidance of Episode I has little associated with midi-chlorians or Mike Lloyd or Jar Jar Binks. Its because of most likely probably the most heinous, sacrilegious act perpetrated with the Creator: the CG-ification of Yoda. Lucas seems very proud that he could replace the Yoda puppet in Episode I getting an electronic version to make sure that lucrative matches his options in Episodes II and III. Evaluating it for the relaxation in the new trilogy, my estimation of Menace have been, It's not good, but no less than that certain retains old-school Yoda. Now it doesn't obtain that. I am in a position to accept a lot of the changes Lucas makes for the Alien films over time, but that certain actually was tough will be able to take. Personally, Puppet Yoda might be the only real Yoda. CGI Yoda can suck it. Brooklynite Christopher Scheer, another Yoda fan, totally confirms with me at night. Hes just a little biased though hes a puppeteer. Best job ever, right? CGI allows you to definitely certainly do a new challenge, like have Yoda hop around as being a badass, Scheer values. However think that we have lost much more if this involves Yodas expression and presence inside the moments, because its this prefabricated, very elaborate computerized illusion instead of puppetry. It's not that Puppet Yoda is any longer real than Digital Yoda. Youre talking about whether a puppet that a person has his submit which is making your way around is a lot more realistic when compared to a computer image, states Scheer. Nevertheless the puppet remains undertaking instantly and theres still a artist there following his impulses and creating subtleties inside the performance. There's an excellent of performance that we dont think you can actually get with CGI. The Puppeteer has spoken, nonetheless its too far gone my beloved Yoda remains labored another blow. As Ive mentioned formerly, The Creator has every to mess along with his own creation. But Mr. Lucas, if you're listening, If perhaps youd remember these wise words: If when you begin lower the dark path, forever will it dominate your future consume you it'll. Air your Yoda issues inside the comments section and also on Twitter!

Melanie Lockyer is casting teen and adult actors for a developmental workshop of "Because of Winn-Dixie," a new musical from Tony Award-winner Duncan Sheik ("Spring Awakening") and Tony-nominee Nell Benjamin ("Legally Blonde"). The musical adaptation of Kate DiCamillo's children's novel of the same name, with music by Sheik and book and lyrics by Benjamin, is intended for Broadway.Plans for a Spring 2012 reading were announced in December, and dates are now confirmed for early March. John Tartaglia, the Tony-nominated star of "Avenue Q," will direct. This developmental workshop will be followed by an out-of-town tryout, before a possible Broadway opening. Equity principal auditions will be held Friday, February 17 in NY City."Because of Winn-Dixie" tells the story of Opal, a young girl who gains confidence and rekindles her relationship with her father after she finds a stray dog at a Winn-Dixie supermarket. A film adaptation of "Winn-Dixie" was released in 2005.Actors cast in the stage production must be comfortable working with animals, as "Because of Winn-Dixie" will be the first Broadway musical starring a live dog as the central character. Taran, an Irish Wolfhound, has been cast in the title role. The workshop will be used to integrate a live animal into the story and music."It has always amazed me the reaction animals have on an audience," animal trainer Bill Berloni said in a statement. "My theory is we all know anything onstage is an extension of reality... So when a dog or cat comes onstage, our collective reality is 'Wait a minute, you can't get an animal to act, what is it going to do?' And it brings the audience closer into the piece. While you can create animals as main characters in film, it has never been tried onstage."For more information and audition details, view the full casting notice on BackStage.com. (Subscription required.)Melanie Lockyer is a freelance casting director who recently cast "John Tartaglia's "Imaginocean." She also worked with Mungioli Theatricals on the Broadway and touring companies of "Fela!."

Alley Mills Gets Busted on The Bold and the Beautiful
Alley Mills Add The Bold and the Beautiful's Pam Douglas to the list of the nation's unemployed. The bipolar spinster, played with hilarity and heartbreak by veteran actress Alley Mills, will finally get caught at her latest scheme - stealing designs from her sister Stephanie's fashion house, Forrester Creations, and giving them to the competition. Their must-see confrontation (airing Jan. 30-31) ends with Pam, the receptionist at Forrester, being fired by Stephanie and escorted from the building. TV Guide Magazine spoke with Mills to ask the big question: Now what? TV Guide Magazine: What's going to happen to poor, pathetic Pam once she gets busted?Mills: This could take her to a very dark place. It never occurred to her that she'd get caught. She doesn't have anybody left in her life. No friends. No men. This is bad. The shocking thing is that Stephanie doesn't blow when she finds out Pam's the thief. She's disappointed and really hurt, and for someone as fragile as Pam that's devastating. [Laughs] At least Stephanie doesn't throw Pam off a balcony. She's been known to handle problems that way! TV Guide Magazine: None of this would have happened if Pam hadn't gotten mad at Stephanie for ignoring her relationship with Stephen.Mills: Pam feels totally justified in stealing those designs. All she wanted was to be validated by Stephanie. Pam finally found a man and her sister wouldn't give him the time of day. She never gave Pam any support. She never invited them over for dinner. Nothing. TV Guide Magazine: Hell-oooo! Stephen was Stephanie's arch enemy. What the heck did Pam expect? I love your soap-opera amnesia. Mills: Stephanie should have tried harder to accept Stephen. Finally that rare man came along who could love her sister and she didn't care. That's all I'm saying. Stephen and Pam had a serious relationship going. They were talking about taking a romantic trip to Fuji or something. [Laughs] They even had the pamphlets. TV Guide Magazine: I guess it counts for something that Pam didn't sell the designs. She just gave them away to Jackie and Nick. Mills: Though she did get paid in other ways. She got a couple of really good kisses from Nick. And that's a lot for Pam! She doesn't need cash. Betty White left her with loads of money! TV Guide Magazine: Well, if it's any consolation, Pam's crime will be forgotten, probably sooner than later. Nothing lasts forever on B&B.Mills: It's true. Betty White told me they've asked her to return to the show even though her character is dead. I don't know how they can do that. She'll probably be haunting Pam in the mirror. TV Guide Magazine: I love how Pam's all pissed at Steph but doesn't seem to mind that she was being used by Nick, who suddenly started coming on to her as some sort of sick reward for the theft. Mills: Nobody was using anybody there. The great thing about Pam is that she knows exactly what Nick's all about. Their flirtation was a lark. She was just having fun. And he actually had fun with her! He wasn't rolling his eyes and going, "Ugh! I have to kiss Pam." He actually liked it. Pam is a hoot to hang out with, so it wasn't like the worst thing that ever happened to him. And what made the whole thing work on-screen is that Jack Wagner wasn't rolling his eyes because he had to kiss me. He had fun, too! And Pam likes Jackie because Jackie doesn't treat Pam like an idiot, which is what everyone at Forrester does. She's kind of a joke over there. TV Guide Magazine: You don't think it's really creepy of Nick to be play-acting with someone who's manic-depressive?Mills: No! It's terrible that I can relate to this. [Laughs] I guess I'm that desperate sometimes! Hey, if you had a crush on someone and you knew it could never work out, the two of you might still have a fling anyway if you provided some sort of service to the other person - like if you wrote about them in TV Guide. TV Guide Magazine: What? You mean people will have sex with you if you write about them in TV Guide? News to me. And, by the way, what kind of slut do you think I am? Mills: I'm just saying you can justify arrangements like this! Pam was never the victim. She has several times said, "I'm no fool" when it comes to Nick. She knew what she was getting into. TV Guide Magazine: Well, in the end, I guess her punishment could have been worse. What she did was illegal, no?Mills: Well, you can't arrest her! [Laughs] Haven't you ever heard of forgiveness? It just seems so unfair even to fire her. TV Guide Magazine: There isn't a company in America that wouldn't oust her ass for stealing like that.Mills: There could certainly have been a better solution than termination. TV Guide Magazine: Such as...?Mills: Stephanie could have put Pam on probation. [Laughs] Or she could have put her down in the basement with Thorne! Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Grey's Anatomy Scoop: MerDer Happiness, a Cristina-Owen Explosion and also the Alt-Reality
Ellen Pompeo, Patrcik Dempsey After two several weeks from the air and also the sad dying of Teddy's husband, the spring instances of Grey's Anatomy promise more happy occasions, especially since Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) finally got custody of the children of baby Zola. We'll even visit a not "dark and twisty" Meredith within the special alternate-reality episode. But it is not every vibrant and shiny: TVGuide.com sitting lower with executive producer Shonda Rhimes, who told us that Cristina (Sandra Oh), for just one, is heading toward dark occasions. And what's this about George and Izzie coming back? Exclusive: Grey's Anatomy and Practice doing another crossover ABC Leader Paul Lee introduced Tuesday he has high wants Grey's to come back for next season. Isn't it time to tackle that? Shonda Rhimes: I seem like i was told that's what is happening. So, we are just making the plans the way you always result in the plans. I've got a full arrange for what is going to happen next season. I must say per month-and-a-half ago I did not possess a full plan. Only one day, I awoke and that i did. The apparent real question is if Pompeo decides to not renew her contract, is Lexie (Chyler Leigh) being prepared to become the Gray of Grey's Anatomy? Rhimes: No. I am talking about I really like the smoothness of Lexi. I believe Chyler is amazing. Which was never truly the vision from the show, like i was seeking a alternative. I would not think that whatsoever. Since Meredith and Derek have Zola back, the way that alter the dynamic of the marriage? Rhimes: They are getting a lot fun with Zola it's been amazing to look at. I additionally love, story-smart and character-smart, the evolution of Meredith's character, this lady who, I recall saying in a lot of interviews, she'll not have kids. Then, really while using shooting to obtain her to some place where she'd believe that maybe she may wish to have kids, and also to now see her like a mother is actually beautiful. I did not seem like their marriage was screwed up. She just felt like when they could not obtain baby back, it would be considered a problem, but there's lots of pleasure there, that is really fun to determine for the pair of them. They are getting an enjoyable experience together. ABC at TCA: Scoop on Grey's, General Hospital so when Cougar Town may return What's going to we have seen for Mark (Eric Dane) and Lexie, who clearly have feelings for one another, that is made especially difficult now that we understand Lexie does not hate Mark's new girlfriend? Rhimes: I do not think that will change her having the ability to overcome her feelings though.Mark and Lexie, I really like them together. We've heated, heated arguments within the writers' room about the pair of them. Many people seem like they should not be together whatsoever, he's too old on her, she has an infant. I seem like she gets some becoming an adult to complete, along with he and perhaps they are getting there. Following a dying of Henry, it appears like Cristina and Owen (Kevin McKidd) are going to hit a tough patch. What else could you tease? Rhimes: The explosion is originating. I believe it is going to affect every corner of the lives. A few of the performances that Sandra and Kevin are submiting are, like, individuals are crying as you're watching the dailies. It's unbelievably good what they are doing. Fans are actually committed to the Cristina-Owen relationship and could be, ahem, very open should something happen for them. Rhimes: I believe everyone's really devoted for them like a couple. I am not likely to say whether they are likely to split up or otherwise because, honestly, that's type of not the purpose within this. However I seem like they are a couple who actually want to be together, who're fighting to really make it work. What that will mean is it will likely be fairly painful, even when they have great results. It will likely be an unpleasant journey. Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes trades MerDer for Scandal: "It's just like a British miniseries" Embracing the alternate-reality episode, we all know that Derek continues to be married to Addison (Kate Walsh), but who's Meredith with? Rhimes: You will find some very surprising stuff that take place in the alternate-reality episode. I understand that fans happen to be going insane using their worries as well as their fears. This is an alternate reality, meaning it does not exist. Really, the premise is exactly what might have happened if Meredith's mother had not had Alzheimer's disease, if Meredith have been elevated like a vibrant and shiny person. So, vibrant-and-shiny Meredith makes several things on the planet completely different. I believe it is surprising whenever you uncover what she has been doing together with her some time and the type of person she's become. How about Cristina within the alt-reality? Rhimes: It's the concept that without Meredith there to become her ally in anything, and when Meredith had not had the experience to chop her from that wedding gown, who'd Christina happen to be?She is only a essentially different person and, I believe, a lonely one. And Bailey (Chandra Wilson)? Rhimes: Without Richard to take the time coaching her, Mandy Bailey may have remained Mandy Bailey and not reached function as the Nazi. Now that we understand Callie and Owen are together within the alternate-reality episode, what's going to we have seen on their behalf? Rhimes: Callie being with Owen may be the biggest mistake of each of their lives. It is extremely funny simply because they and so do no enterprise being together. She's so pining with this peds surgeon and she or he does not know why. It is because she didn't have Mark Sloan there and Erica Hahn (Brooke Cruz) never came, because [Callie] was one's heart surgeon, so she didn't have her first knowledge about a lady. It is charming and delightful. It's more concerning the fact that they are using the wrong people than about the subject being together. Maybe there is a reference to George and/or Izzie within the episode? Rhimes: You realize where they went within this " new world ". Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
